The Housemartins

'Now That's What I Call

Quite Good'

Released 1987
Other Releases London 0, Hull 4
Album Summary Who would have predicted the evolution of The Beautiful South from a group who will forever be remembered as Hull's most mediocre export? Boasting Fatboy Slim on bass guitar, The Housemartins had one blistering single in the form of 'Happy Hour', followed by a shedload of flaccid MOR, culminating in the execrable 'Caravan Of Love' at the end of '86. A B-sides and demos "Best Of…" doesn't sound such a good idea now, does it?

You know you're getting old when…

  •  The idea of going in a moshpit actually scares you

It suddenly occurs to you that at least three-quarters of the music played on Peel is shite

Your mistrust of goths/punks/metallers morphs into an open and uncontrollable fear

You don't recognise anyone on Top of the Pops…

…And find yourself wondering if they are boys or girls

You go out clubbing, but have to stop dancing when you get a stitch

"What's wrong with a pipe and slippers?"

You develop a nostalgic longing for the golden age of Britpop

You want to tape Emmerdale but can't work out how to use the video recorder

The Housemartins suddenly take on an importance in your life. Especially that lovely 'Caravan' song

  • Paul Heaton, take note.
